Summoning은국내 블랙메틀 팬들에게는 거의 신적인 존재로 대접받고 있다.

물론 블랙메틀은 커녕 헤비메틀만 들어도 머리가 지글지글 아픈 일반인들이야 상관없는 이야기이겠지만, 블랙메틀 팬들에게는 이들이야말로..  마이클 잭슨이고, 비틀즈이며..  HOT이다.

얘네들의 음반은 항상 실마릴리온 - 호비트 - 반지의 제왕 연작 소설을 소재로 삼고 있다.

1집 Lugburz, 2집 Minas Morgul, 3집 Dol Guldor, 4집 Stronghold로 이어지는 모든 음반이 반지의 제왕을 다루고 있다.(고 생각한다.)

지금 소개하려는 5집은 연작의 두번째 작품인 The Hobbit를 다루고 있다.

Summoning의 최고 명반으로 Stronghold를 꼽는 사람이 많지만, 나는 단연 본 앨범이 최고라고 본다.

처음 들을때는 다른 음반들에 비해서 별로라고 느낄수도 있지만 반복해서 들으면 들을수록, 새로운 느낌과 감동을 준다.


Summoning - Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame

본 앨범은 반지의 제왕 전편인 The Hobbit의 내용을 담고 있다. 내용을 간단히 알아보자.

이야기는 빌보 배긴스(Bilbo Baggins)와 간달프(Gandalf)의 가벼운 장난으로 시작된다.

항상 모험을 꿈꾸는 빌보 배긴스를 위해서 간달프는 어느날 드워프 12명을 데려오는데...

드워프들의 리더인 소린, 반지의 제왕에 등장한 김리의 아버지 글로인, 모리아의 통치자이자 고블린들의 침입에 맞서 용감히 싸우다 전사한 발린 등등...

이들은 소린의 할아버지와 아버지를 내쫏고 오아켄쉴드 집안의 엄청난 재산을 탈취한 드래곤 Smaug를 물리치고, 빼앗긴 보물을 되찾기 위해서 모험을 떠난다.

이들은 여러 사건을 겪고, 결국 고블린 VS 엘프-드워프-인간 종족간의 전쟁을 일으키게 된다.

어쨌든 빌보 배긴스는 이 모험을 통해 큰 재산과 정체 모를 마법 반지를 손에 넣게 되는데, 바로 이것이 절대 반지이다.

빌보가 우연히 손에 넣게 된 이 반지는 소설 호비트에서 반지의 착용자를 투명인간으로 만들어 주는 단순한 마법 반지로만 소개된다.

그러나 이 사소한 것이 이후 사우론과 아라곤의 피할 수 없는 대결을 그린 소설 반지 전쟁에서는 이야기의 핵심 요소이자, 톨킨이 창조한 중간계의 운명을 좌지우지 할 수 있는 아주 중요한 것으로 등장하게 된다.

참고로 The Hobbit는 뉴라인 시네마에 의해 영화로 제작될 예정인데, 수익금 분배 문제로 소송중인 피터 잭슨은 감독으로 쓰지 않겠다고 선언했다고 한다. 

괘씸죄인지는 모르겠으나, 참 아쉬운 일이다.


어쨌든 신비로운 키보드와 지글거리는 트레몰로 주법의 기타, 둥둥 울리는 드럼 머신으로 표현되는 중간계로 여행을 떠나 보자!



A New Power Is Rising - 플레이 버튼이 뜰때까지 잠시만 기다리세요.


사우론과 결탁한 사루만은, 1만의 우르크하이 대부대에게 헬름 협곡(Helm Hammerhand)으로 진격하여 인간들의 세계를 끝장내라고 명령한다.

영화를 보신 분들이라면 "A New Power Is Rising"이라는 말이 어디서 나왔는지 알 것이다.


물론 곡의 내용은 그 이전..  끝없는 야심가인 사우론에 의해서 반지가 처음 만들어졌던 때의 이야기를 담고 있다.

분위기 있게 깔리는 키보드 백킹 사운드 아래 쿵덕거리는 드럼머신이 조화를 이루어 장엄한 분위기를 연출하고 있다.

The Hobbit의 Chapter IX "Barrel out of Bonds"에서 따온 엘프들의 노래이다. 

빌보 배긴스가 프로도에게 물려준 작은 칼이 바로 엘프들에게서 선물받은 것이다.


Leave the halls and caverns deep

Float beyond the world of trees
Past the rushes, past the reeds
Past the marshes, weaving weeds

In Hollow Halls Beneath The Fell

the Hobbit의 Chapter I "An Unexpected Party"에서 따온 드워프들의 노래이다.


'In Hollow Halls Beneath The Fell'이란 드워프들의 작업장을 뜻한다.

위의 그림은 간달프, 소린의 일행이 빌보의 집인 백 엔드에서 Lonely Mountain으로 여행을 떠나기 전 장면이다.  말그대로 An Unexpected Party!!

참고로 가사에 보면 Misty Mountain(안개 산맥)이 나오는데, 여기에 빌보 배긴스에게 절대 반지를 갈취(?)당하는 골룸이 살고 있다.


Far over the misty mountains cold

Out Foes Shall Fall

공포의 벌레는 칼에 베여 죽고, 우리의 적들은 쓰러질 것이다.

The Hobbit의 Chapter XV "The Gathering of the Clouds"에 나오는 내용이다.


오래된 기록에 따르면 한명의 고귀한 드워프가 반지 전쟁이 끝나고, 새로운 나라를 세웠다고 한다.

바로 글로인(Glóin)의 아들 김리(Gimli)이다.

그는 반지 모험을 위해 선발된 원정대의 일원이었으며, 반지 전쟁에서 위대한 명성을 얻었다.

전쟁후 김리는 살아남은 드워프들을 이끌어 아글라론드(Aglarond)라는 나라를 세우며, 찬란한 동굴(Glittering Caves)의 군주가 된다.

이후 그는 드워프들을 이끌고 전쟁으로 부서진 모든 것들을 복구하는데, 특히 왕들의 도시인 미나스 티리스의 시가지를 더욱 훌륭하게 고치고, 부서진 성문은 강철과 미스릴로 새롭게 만들었다고 한다.

김리는 100년이 넘도록 아글라론드를 다스렸지만, 죽은 시점은 확실하지 않다.

일부의 역사가들은 김리가 동료였던 인간들의 왕 엘레사르(아라곤)가 서거한 뒤, 왕위를 다른 이에게 넘기고 절친한 친구인 이실리엔의 엘프왕 레골라스의 땅으로 갔다고 한다.

전설에 따르면 김리는 레골라스와 함께 엘프의 배에 올라타고 바다 건너 영원의 땅(Undying Lands)로 떠났다고 한다.

The Mountain King's Return

The Hobbit의 Chapter X "A Warm Welcome"

빌보 배긴스(Bilbo Baggins)와 함께 모험을 떠난 드워프 소린 오아켄쉴드(Thorin Oakenshield)의 조상인 스로르(Thrór)에 대한 노래이다.

The king beneath the mountains
The king of carven stone
The lord of silver fountains
Shall come into his own!

His crown shall be upholden
His harp shall be restrung
His halls shall echo golden
To songs of yore resung

The woods shall wave on mountains
And grass beneath the sun
His wealth shall flow in fountains
And rivers golden run

The streams shall run in gladness
The lakes shall shine and burn
All sorrow fail and sadness
At mountains king's return

역사가들에 따르면, 스로르(Thrór)는 드워프들의 왕이었으나, 모리아(Moria)에서 길을 잃고 떠돌아 다니던 중 오크들의 족장 아조그(Azog)에 살해당했다고 한다.

그의 시신은 토막 나서 몸통은 까마귀의 먹이로 던져지고 머리만이 백성들에게 전달되었다.

분노한 모든 드워프들은 오크와 전쟁을 벌이기로 결의한다.

이 격전은 7년 동안 지속되었다.

드워프들은 서쪽의 모든 오크 동굴을 찾아다니며 그들을 남김없이 살해했으며, 마침내 2799년에 모리아의 동쪽 문까지 이르렀다.

그곳에서 아자눌비자르(Azanulbizar) 전투가 벌어진다. 이때 북부의 오크는 거의 전멸하다시피 했다. 그러나 드워프들은 그들의 승리에 기뻐할 수 없었다. 그들중 절반만이 살아남았던 것이다.



위는 인터넷에서 발견한 아자눌비자르 전투에 대한 만화.  이름모를 분께 감사드린다.

Runes Of Power

The Hobbit의 Chapter VII "Queer Lodgings"의 내용이다.

드워프들의 전승에 의하면 룬문자는 모리아의 입구에 새겨져 있는데, 오직 달빛으로만 빛난다고 한다.

The wind came down from mountain could
And like a tide it roared and rolled
The branches groaned, the forest moaned
And leaves were laid upon the mould

The wind went on from West to east
All movement in the forest ceased
But shrill an harsh across the marsh
Its whistling voices were released

Ashen Gold

내용으로 보건데, Sauron에 대한 노래인 것 같다.

가사에 보면 "사우론의 힘은 복구될 것이다." "당신과 우리는 정복자가 될 것이다."라는 내용이 있는데, 이 말을 하는 주체가 누구인지는 잘 모르겠다.  반지 시리즈에 정통하지 못해서 아쉽다.


실마릴리온을 보면 Sauron이 처음부터 절대적인 강자는 아니다. 

힘보다는 지혜가 뛰어난 존재로 묘사되는데, 절대 반지를 만들기까지 오랜 인고의 세월을 겪는다.


A grin and a word is his trade

Farewell

안녕을 뜻하는 제목 때문에 서모닝의 마지막이라는 루머가 돌게 했던 곡이다. 

중반부의 웅장한 남성 코러스가 정말 가슴을 저민다. 

판타스틱한 앨범의 마무리로 조금도 부족함이 없다.

Who can find you clear springs of waters, but I can!
Who can tell you the age of the moon, but I can!
Who can call the fish from the depths of the see, yes I can!
