앤드류 잭슨 대통령 각하!

The canal system of this country is being threatened by the spread of a new form of transportation known as "railroads."
현재 건설 중인 철도라는 새로운 교통 수단이 확산되면서 우리나라의 운하 시스템이 심각한 위협을 받는 상황이 벌어지고 있습니다. 

The federal government must preserve the canals for the following reasons:
연방정부는 다음과 같은 여러 가지 이유들 때문에 운하를 반드시 지켜야 합니다.


One. If canal boats are supplanted by "railroads,"serious unemployment will result.
첫째, 만약 운하를 운항하는 선박들이 철도에 밀려난다면, 심각한 실업문제가 야기될 것입니다.

Captains, cooks, drivers, hostlers, repairmen and lock tenders will be left without means of livelihood, not to mention the numerous farmers now employed in growing hay for the horses.
선장, 요리사, 운항사, 수리사, 수문(갑문) 관리인 등이 생계수단을 상실할 것이며, 말들이 먹을 건초를 재배하는 많은 농민들도 마찬가지일 겁니다.



Two. Boat builders would suffer, and towline, whip and harness makers would be left destitute.
둘째, 선박 건조업자들이 고통을 겪을 것이며, 예인용 밧줄이나 말채찍 제조업자들도 가난에 빠질 것입니다.



Three. Canal boats are absolutely essential to the defense of the United States.
셋째, 운하를 운항하는 선박들은 미국의 안전을 위해서도 절대적으로 필요합니다.

In the event of the expected trouble with England, the Erie Canal would be the only means by which we could ever move the supplies so vital to waging modern war.
예컨대 영국과의 전쟁이 벌어질 경우, 운하는 현대전을 치루는 데 중요한 물자를 수송하는 유일한 수단입니다.



As you may well know, Mr. President, "railroad" carriages are pulled at the enormous speed of fifteen miles per hour by "engines" 
각하께서도 잘 아시다시피, 철도 위를 운행하는 기차는 엔진의 힘에 의해 시속 약 24 킬로미터라는 어마어마한 속도로 달립니다.

which, in addition to endangering life and limb of passengers, roar and snort their way through the countryside, setting fire to crops, scaring the livestock and frightening women and children.
따라서 승객들의 생명이 위험할 뿐만 아니라 시골길을 굉음을 내며 달리면서 곡식들을 태워버릴 수도 있고, 가축들을 겁에 질리게 하며, 아이들과 여자들을 공포에 떨게 만들것입니다.

The Almighty certainly never intended that people should travel at such breakneck speed.
분명히 하나님께서는 인간이 그런 위험한 속도로 내달리도록 허락하시진 않으셨을 겁니다.
